Physical and biogenic complexity mediates ecosystem functions in urban sessile marine communities

چکیده

Abstract The influence of habitat complexity on biodiversity is a central theme in ecology, with many studies reporting positive relationships. Reconciliation approaches urbanised areas, such as eco‐engineering, have increasingly focused ‘re‐building’ the degraded and/or homogenised habitats to support biodiversity. Yet, effects increasing and ecological functions are rarely measured. We assessed how physical biogenic affects net primary productivity (NPP) gross (GPP), community respiration nutrient cycling (specifically dissolved inorganic phosphorus nitrogen) intertidal sessile marine communities at three sites. manipulated using two types settlement tiles: ‘complex’, crevices ridges, ‘flat’. increased half replicates each tile type by seeding oysters. Increased resulted greater species richness all Although variables varied sites time measurements, overall, GPP NPP were flat tiles than complex ones. These patterns not explained differences total surface area tiles. Daily flux rates had significant relationship complexity. There no or fluxes nitrogen. Effects largely unrelated diversity measures, abundance key taxa functional groups. Synthesis applications . Eco‐engineering practices that manipulate might benefit from explicit targets also consider associated ecosystem services, we found under some conditions there trade‐off between targets. Our results suggest has effect richness, but necessarily (GPP NPP). pool available well light availability likely mediate assemblages, so local environment needs be consideration when designing interventions.

Changes in habitat heterogeneity alter marine sessile benthic communities.

Habitat heterogeneity is considered an important mechanism influencing diversity patterns in spatially structured habitats. However, spatial heterogeneity is not static and it can change along temporal scales. These changes, whether gradual or rapid, have the potential of forcing species extinctions or facilitating the introduction of nonnative species. Here, we present modeling results that sh...

Assessing the structure and temporal dynamics of seabird communities: the challenge of capturing marine ecosystem complexity

Understanding interspecific interactions, and the influences of anthropogenic disturbance and environmental change on communities, are key challenges in ecology. Despite the pressing need to understand these fundamental drivers of community structure and dynamics, only 17% of ecological studies conducted over the past three decades have been at the community level. Here, we assess the trophic s...

Sustaining multiple ecosystem functions in grassland communities requires higher biodiversity.

Society places value on the multiple functions of ecosystems from soil fertility to erosion control to wildlife-carrying capacity, and these functions are potentially threatened by ongoing biodiversity losses. Recent empirically based models using individual species' traits suggest that higher species richness is required to provide multiple ecosystem functions. However, no study to date has an...

Persistence and space preemption explain species‐specific founder effects on the organization of marine sessile communities

Community assembly may not follow predictable successional stages, with a large fraction of the species pool constituted by potential pioneering species and successful founders defined through lottery. In such systems, priority effects may be relevant in the determination of trajectories of developing communities and hence diversity and assemblage structure at later advanced states. In order to...

Discriminating mesozooplankton communities in Bushehr marine coastal ecosystems- Persian Gulf

Coastal ecosystems of Bushehr are shallow environments subject to human impacts, including shrimp aquaculture and urban expansion activities. A spatial-temporal study was conducted in order to assess the actual ecological status of the creeks, estuary and marine sites on the basis of their taxonomic composition and density of mesozooplankton. Zooplankton species distribution and abundance data ...
